When paintless repair works, and when it does not
Paintless dent repair is exactly what the name says: the dent is worked out of the metal without filler, sanding or new paint, so the factory finish stays on the car. It suits shallow, rounded dents where the paint is still unbroken, such as a door ding from a parking lot or the dimples left behind by a hailstorm.
It does not suit everything. A sharp crease, paint that has cracked or chipped, metal that has stretched, or a dent right on a panel edge leaves no safe way to push the surface back without damaging it. In those cases the honest repair is the conventional one: fill, sand and refinish the panel.
The only way to know which side of that line your dent falls on is to have someone look at it in good light. Ron Kirk's Body Shop in Holton lists paintless dent removal among its services for just that reason, and the answer you get should come before any work starts.
Reading the dent, then pushing it back
The usual method begins with reading the dent. A technician lights the panel with a striped reflection board, and the stripes bend wherever the metal is low, which shows the depth and the edge of the damage far better than the naked eye can. Then the work is slow and patient.
Special tools reach behind the panel and push the low spot up in many small passes, tapping down any high spots that appear, until the stripes run straight again. Because the paint is never touched, there is no color to match and no clear coat to blend into the panel next to it.
That is also why it tends to suit smaller jobs. A big dent has stretched the metal, and no amount of patience at the back of the panel makes up for that. Hail damage can be the exception, since many small shallow dents are close to what the method does best.
Bumper repairs and dents that need paint
Ron Kirk's does bumper repairs and dent removal as well as paintless work, and its own line is "From Major Dents to Minor Scratches, We Fix It All." When the paint is broken or the metal is creased, the job moves into the body shop's regular repair and refinish process in Holton.
The shop's headline promises "Fixing Your Dents, Without Putting One in Your Wallet." Bring the car by 501 Vermont Ave on a weekday, or call (785) 364-2931, and you will hear plainly whether your dent is a paintless candidate or a job that needs paint.
